There are many ways to prepare low carb barbecue for a tasty family lunch. You can choose from meat and vegetarian options, sauces, and side dishes.

Ingredients and Sauces

First, you have to think of low carb substitutes to modify your recipe of choice. For example, you can add sweet flavored spices and herbs such as cinnamon and cloves and use tomato paste. Ketchup contains a lot of sugar while tomato paste is a good choice. It is a good idea to make a low carb barbecue sauce at home. Most readymade sauces contain a lot of sugar, salt, and other additives. Other ingredients include artificial sweeteners, syrups, molasses, fruit juices, and sugars. To make a barbecue sauce, you can use ingredients and spices such as oregano, thyme, mustard powder, and garlic powder. Mix water, tomato paste, and soy sauce or Worcestershire sauce. Then add spices and herbs of your choice. Bring to boil to thicken the sauce and then leave to cool. Another idea is to prepare bourbon barbeque sauce. Mix garlic, red onion, sugar substitute, hot sauce, vinegar, and bourbon.

You can use different techniques to prepare barbecue food. One option is to steam grill food and another is to use a clay pot grill. Smoking barbecue meat is also a good idea. How you cook meat also depends on whether you have a charcoal bullet smoker, offset smoker, charcoal grill, or gas grill. If you have a water pan, you can add beer or wine. Some people also use sand.


There is a large selection of BBQ recipes for your family lunch or dinner. For example, you can make barbecue beef brisket. You will need beef bouillon, beef broth, and beef brisket. To make the dry rub, mix spices and seasonings such as coriander, garlic powder, salt and sugar, paprika, and oregano. Another idea is to prepare halloumi kebabs with thyme. Buy cherry tomatoes, halloumi cheese, red onion, and courgettes for the kebabs. Thread the onion courgettes, cherry tomatoes, and halloumi onto skewers. Mix Dijon mustard, thyme, lemon juice and olive oil, brush the kebabs, and cook for 5 – 6 minutes. Use low carb patties. Season with cumin and chili powder. There are other options for vegetarians and vegans. Recipes to try include griddled aubergines, bulgur, pepper, and charred aubergine salad, halloumi and courgette skewers, and marinated and grilled vegetables. BBQ vegetables with cheese is a great family meal for Sunday afternoon. It is best to use goat’s cheese. You will need garlic cloves, wine vinegar, olive oil, spring onions, tomatoes, and aubergines. Use low carb tortillas and season with fresh basil leaves. Serve with warm tortillas. Grilled vegetables are easy to make. You can grill vegetables such as onions, peppers, mushrooms, eggplant, and asparagus. Make sure you check the carb content. Corn, for example, is high in starch and carbohydrate content and should be avoided. Other vegetables that are high in carbs include potatoes, parsnip, winter squashes, peas, and beets. Consume eggplant, green onions, zucchini, summer squash, cauliflower, and broccoli instead.
