Every year around 50 million people go on a diet in the US. They spend over 30 billion dollars on diet products. This includes diet foods, gym memberships, diet books and videos, etc.

Some people want to lose weight quickly. There are diets out there that say you can do so. They offer people significant weight loss in a short period in time. However, it is important to remember that it is not usually safe to lose a lot of weight quickly. Many of these diets really do not work. You may lose some water weight and then gain it back.

There are no quick fixes to losing weight. Some people try many different diets without success. There are “fad” diets and seemingly “miracle diets.” Do not try diet plans that make “false” claims or that are unsafe. Some people have followed, “ice cream diets”, the grapefruit diet, low-fat, low-carb and on and on.

Some diets can work relatively well. If you do cut down on how many calories you eat, you can lose weight. Do not cut back too much though because this can be unsafe as well. If you eat many more calories than you should, then yes, you may want to cut back. Eating smaller portions of meals each day over time can even help you to lose weight.

Many people have had success on low-carb diets. This is especially true for people who have a lot of weight to lose. The safeness of low-carb diets like the Atkins Diet is often called into question. These diets limit how much fruits and vegetables you eat. You may be missing out on essential vitamins and minerals. Some people eat many meat, eggs and cheese on the Atkins diet. They are eating a great deal of fat and that is not good for your health.

In many cases one should not “diet.” Dieting often means that you change your eating habits for a period of time until you lose weight. This may be why many people who diet and lose weight, gain the weight back. They may change their diet for a period of time and after lose weight return to they same lifestyle.

It is important for everyone to eat a well-balanced diet. If you need to lose weight you may want to change your eating habits for life. Talk to your doctor or a dietician to learn more about a health, well-balanced diet. Learn how you can make better decisions when you eat. If you change your eating habits and make healthy choices you can lose weight and keep it off.

Eating along is not sufficient to maintain ideal weight and health. You must also stay active. Before starting any diet or exercise program consult with your doctor.
